Chainmail CoifCoifs spread all over Europe from the Early Middle Ages on and by the turn of the
millennium became a standard part of equipment of a knightâs armour. In most
cases it was worn as an additional protection under a helmet. Especially from
the 12th century there are also paintings where the coif was worn on
top of an extremely padded arming cap. As the Bascinets developed to Grand
Bascinets and Sallets the coif was replaced by the aventail and finally
disappeared in the mid 16th century.
