Bucket Helm![]() The Flat Top or Bucket helmet is the typical
knight helmet throughout the High Middle Ages. Appearing in its earliest
forms from the middle of the 12th century it developed from a helmet
with a rather broad nasal to a face plate helmet and then on to the
Great Helm by the beginning of the 14th century.
Its use was limited to mounted combat because visibility, hearing and
ventilation were reduced to offer maximum protection. With the
development of the Bacinet this kind of helmet disappeared from the
battlefield but was longer in use for tournaments.
